The Calder & Picasso exhibition: the meeting of artistic giants

When the works of Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso are invited to the Picasso Museum, all art lovers come to Paris! Bringing together two internationally renowned artists, the Calder & Picasso exhibition invites the curious for an experience to make the stars shine in your eyes. You have until August 25, 2019 to enjoy it!

Innovative figures in the artistic world of the 20th century, Calder and Picasso have reinvented the way art is approached. Each in their own way, they explored the void and absence of space, the figurative and the abstract, while defying the laws of gravity. Calder and Picasso met only twice in their lives: at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and 20 years later at UNESCO Headquarters.

Around a scenography that will turn your head, more than 120 works by the two artists will transport you into a universe where space and time no longer have a hold. The exhibition highlights the common points and convergences of the two artists, their artistic collaborations and confrontations.

Many artists have shared the poster of an exhibition with Picasso. But this one seems to be self-evident. After all, Calder is seen as the "Picasso of the United States". An honor for the young American artist to be compared to the Catalan monster! Yet Calder's aerial works contrast with Picasso's cubist paintings. But no matter what, the link does exist between the two artists.

Produced in partnership with the Calder Foundation of New York and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte, this exhibition was initiated by the grandsons of the two artists. It will be presented to the Spanish public from 24 September 2019 to 2 February 2020 at the Museo Picasso Málaga.

Walk in the footsteps of these two giants of art to (re)fall under the spell of Calder's Funambule (1932) and Picasso's Little Girl Jumping Rope (1950). From the first glance, you will be drawn by the resonance between the works on display and the evidence of the artistic links between the two artists.
